The first golf course on the Costa Brava.
Located in the middle of the Arenals de Mar estate, on dunes covered by an immense pine forest planted seventy years ago, Golf de Pals was conceived in the early 1960s by Baltasar Parera Vilar and his wife, Rosa Coll Llach, who provided all the necessary land, as well as the construction of the first nine holes, the head office and all the initial machinery for its maintenance.
Although the magazine Destino, in its February 1961 issue, published the first sketches of the future golf course, work did not begin until 1964, under the design and direction of the English architect Fred Hawtree, who from the outset acted in perfect harmony with the wishes of the Parera-Coll family. The developers respected nature to the utmost, to the extent that they did not allow a single pine tree to be felled on the estate that had not already been personally marked.
Thus, in the summer of 1966, the first nine holes of the first golf course on the Costa Brava were inaugurated, and shortly afterwards, in 1968, the course was extended with nine more holes to reach the statutory eighteen holes, which were inaugurated in 1970, with the celebration of the Spanish International Amateur Championship. Two years later, Golf de Pals hosted the 1972 Spanish Open.
Since then, it has been considered one of the best golf courses in Spain, thanks to its careful design and construction, and it has also hosted numerous international competitions.
